History

The KTAS KIRK F68 rotary telephone is considered Denmark’s most popular and iconic telephone of all time. It was produced in 1968-1978 and was available in the colors: Gray, Umber, Green, Yellow and Red. The same phones were produced in the other Scandinavian countries in several other brands and colors: White, Gray, Black, Red, Dark Green and Yellow.

Kristian Kirks Telefonfabrikker was founded in 1892 by Emil Møller. It was taken over by Kristian Kirk in 1923 and became one of Denmark’s leading manufacturers of telephone equipment. The company played a central role in the development of Danish telecommunications and collaborated closely with Kjøbenhavns Telefon Aktieselskab (KTAS), which was established in 1881 and later covered large parts of Zealand, Bornholm, Lolland and Falster.

KIRK F68 is considered an iconic piece of Danish design and has become a sought-after collector’s item. Its simple aesthetics and historical significance make it popular among collectors and design enthusiasts. The model represents an important era in Danish telecommunications history and is a symbol of technological development in the mid-20th century.

About

The phone is converted into a microphone to comply with studio recording standards. It is build with quality parts from Mogami Cables and Neutrik. The microphone narrows the frequency band into the range of 250hz – 4000hz. The phone was build this way to filter unwanted static noise from the telephone signal. The result was a LO-FI speaking voice, that was easily understandable to the human ear.

Without any eq or mixing tricks, can the microphone deleiver an authentic sound of a vintage phone. It can be used as a voice effect for music or podcast recordings. The sound of the phone can also be used as coloration of various instruments during a recording session. It is suitable for voices, guitars, drums or rooms. In a mixing situation can the recording from the Vintage Phone Microphone be blended with another recording to give coloration.

The dynamic microphone capsule is located at the end you would normally put up to your ear.

The output level and output impedance is relatively low. You have to use a mic preamp, to get a good signal.

It is not recommendable to use long cable runs as this may degrade the signal.
